Candy Cigarettes

So I was at work the other day, walking out of a meeting, down the hall, past where our program administrator sits when I saw a Halloween candy bowl with mints and assorted candy.  But.
When I looked closer I saw a type of candy that I didn’t think was made anymore, a candy I loved as a kid, a candy that immediately made me think of my sisters, two cousins, and my Granny’s front yard….CANDY CIGARETTES.

Yes.  Candy Cigarettes (insert happy sigh here).

Of course, they aren’t labeled as candy cigarettes anymore - these had Marvel comic superheroes on the boxes and only two sticks per box.  But, in my head, I saw two candy cigarettes per box, and while I sat by myself in my cubicle minutes later (after scaring one of my coworkers over how excited I was to see this candy) and slowly enjoyed my surprise post-meeting find**, I also got to enjoy memories: making up games to play that involved the corner tree in Granny’s yard; making ice cream soup out of our afternoon snack; playing a completely fairly matched game of soft ball* (or stick ball, since we would just make a bat and ball of what we found laying around); the BEST tire swing (and later trapeze bar) in the entire world; and pretending to not like the color red because my cousins were (one still is) Alabama fans.  (Actually, I still feel odd wearing shades of the color red, which is a shame because dark reds go great with my hair.)

I’m thinking that the next time we are all in Granny’s front yard I’ll bring candy cigarettes and we can play a game of softball that is actually fairly matched.

*So, perhaps, “completely fairly matched” is a slight exaggeration….just slight….maybe the two older kids really thought the three younger ones (and by young, one was a toddler) had an advantage because they had more people on their team…
**If you were thinking, did K really sit at her desk and pretend to smoke a piece of candy? The answer is YES.
