Scupadine, Scupanon, Scuppernong

Greetings! We're still here. We've been quite busy, I haven't even painted my nails in two weeks. I have Squirm's first Disney trip, including first hair cut, pictures to share; and a story on how to pronounce Scuppernong.

I told my mom I had to write a blog post tonight just because of our ten minute phone conversation this evening. My parents had just returned inside after picking "scupadines" from the vines in the back yard - vines that have been there as long as I can remember, September = golden, thick-skinned grapes. We tried discussing whether these were muscadines or "scupadines" - I didn't know the difference - and then I suggested that I thought "scupadines" were actually scuppernongs.

Last fall while grocery shopping at Publix I was shocked to see the label on what I recognized as my beloved back yard treat: Hey! I love these! Why are they labeled Scuppernongs? There's a "g" in the name?

So then my dad joins in and we are both trying to convince my mother that the word is scuppernong: I try to use eggnog as an example and I can hear my dad repeating scuppernong over and over. At one point I just kept saying, it's a G, it's a G. It was a very productive conversation.

I'm not sure if my mom will use the word scuppernong or not. But I feel like I learned a lot about myself....and why R looks at me funnily when I say certain words....really, a lot of words....or words that I think are words that are not.

Mom - please read the first paragraph of this article, it proves you (and me for most of my life) are just pronouncing scuppernong the way people in the "Deep South" say it....I may go back to using scupadine or scupanon (I remember using both terms growing up) to make me feel better about living outside what I consider the "Deep South"*. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scuppernong

Well. Here is a picture. She LOVED meeting the characters and danced throughout It's a Small World. I pledge to post more later about Disney and how everywhere Squirms goes is the happiest place on earth.

*VBM, how do you say scuppernong? Can I call central Florida the "Deep South"?

  1. My Granny ate those, and called them muscadines, I have never heard of scuppernong until today!

Florida is too much of a melting pot to be Deep South. Maybe when my Granny was growing up, or even my parents. But the further south you go in Florida, the more northern it will be. However, as you probably know well, go north, and your experience will be more southern. ;-)

My family has told me that I can call myself Southern, though.

    And farewell, Mullet! :-)
